**Starting this Saturday, May 4, we will be open Saturdays from 10 am-2 pm for our Summer Saturday Hours through the end of August. This is in addition to the regular Tuesday and Wednesday, noon to 6pm.

**Here is a new curriculum from Pennsylvania author, John Pilch:

 Fundamentals of Investing in the Stock Market
 An eight week course for middle-school and high-school students

The more one learns about the power of investing, the more he realizes the importance of starting early. Benjamin Graham, a famous investor of the 20th century wrote, “There is a great advantage for the young capitalist to begin his financial education and experience early. If he is going to operate as an aggressive investor he is certain to make some mistakes and to take some losses. Youth can stand these disappointments and profit by them.”

Fundamentals of Investing in the Stock Market is an introductory curriculum that examines the basics of investing using examples, illustrations, case studies, and exercises. It is designed for students interested in business or for students who desire to manage their personal finances effectively. Ideally, the course will instill in students a passion for investing that inspires them to not only benefit from and enjoy the course, but also to continue to develop their financial aptitude far into the future.

After developing and leading a well-regarded introductory course on investing in the stock market to a homeschooling co-op, I developed the curriculum which attempts to answer some of the most basic questions one might ask about the stock market: What is the stock market and why does it exist? How do investors choose the right stocks in which to invest? How do investors analyze financial information to determine whether or not to invest in a company? Following the course, one student remarked, “I really enjoyed John’s class. He took something as seemingly complicated as the stock market, and boiled down the concepts to something that even a middle-schooler could understand.”

The 8-week course is designed for homeschooled middle- and high-school students and requires only the purchase of the text and the accompanying book, The New Buffettology by Mary Buffett and David Clark. The materials can be purchased separately or as a bundle from our website; a portion of proceeds are donated to the Foundation for Financial Literacy, a foundation whose goal is to educate and support financial education programs in the U.S. The course is divided into 4 main segments: an overview of investing and the stock market, an examination of what separates a good business from a bad one when choosing investments, an introduction to accounting and financial statement analysis, and a look at how to find a buying opportunity. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to different investing strategies and real-world case studies.

2. Thanks to the great response for recycling: I am fully restocked on grocery bags and egg cartons, and found a home for my packing bubbles. Feel free to bring excess bags or cartons with you if you are coming by, and ask for bubbles or boxes if you need them….I’m usually rolling in them!

3. Tuesday April 30 is the last day to take advantage of the Alpha Omega 20% off sale.

These notebooks are now available for the 7th/8th title: Exploring Creation with General Science and the 8th/9th grade title: Exploring Creation with Physical Science. These notebooks lead the student through the module step by step with activities to reinforce the reading and places to record the labs. Looks like a fantastic addition to the program. Notebooks are also available to enhance the K-6th series.

Paving the Way Workshop: Shelly Taylor has reported to me that there are 2 slots still available for the workshop. Plus she will take more names for a waiting list and consider doing another class if there is enough interest.

Recycle:

1. If you happen to be coming to my store and have clean plastic grocery bags you want to recycle, I would be a happy recipient! Also, if you think of it when coming to the store if you brought along a cloth bag for your purchases, they work very well for holding books.

2. I also need clean used egg cartons. If you bring me 15 cartons I will give you a dozen eggs for free.

3. I have more air pillows/bubble wrap for packages if anyone would like a free bag of them to reuse.

Frequently Asked Question: I am getting lots of questions about consignments. Yes, I am accepting consignments (I do year round). They can be brought in during open hours with no prior notice (If you are bringing in more than 5 boxes, it would be better to set up an appointment). Curriculum MUST be current edition. I also accept games, educational manipulatives, and science equipment.

Babies: On a personal note, we have been very busy over the past month with lots of births: 7 lambs and 6 kids. If you want to see some pics, especially of two of them that ended up being bottle babies, please check out my personal blog!

I wanted to take this opportunity to show you some non-book items we carry at PACE. In this case…Games! We have tons of games and at a fraction of the retail price. Most of the board games are priced at $3 or $4 (normally $15-$30 retail–that’s up to 90% off!)

We have games for pre-school through adult:

Lauri puzzles and manipulatives. Wonderful tactile pieces.

Math games shown. We also have TONS of manipulatives for teaching just about any math skill.

Bible and character. It says “Sticky Situations” under the flash.

These are jigsaw puzzles inside a book! Each book contains a number of puzzles.

Games for teaching History and Geography

These are Melissa and Doug tactile puzzle. Working latches, using real latches (top) and buckles, buttons and zippers (below).

Just a sample of the many pre-school skill games. They are colorful and touchable.

And more board games… plus see the Design and Drill on the bottom–that’s a kid drill that actually goes forward and reverse. It is totally cool and amused me for awhile when I checked it in. This is why I love my job.

The expansion and remodel is complete, and with two days to spare!   So we will re-open on schedule this Tuesday, January 15 for regular business hours. I will be sending a coupon to celebrate in a second mailing (so you don’t have to print out the pics to get the coupon.)

Some changes: Considering consigning books? Please read our updated Consignment Policy. All changes are related to acceptable items; no payment changes have been made. Another change is that the free book section on the front porch has been removed. I received too many unsolicited boxes of undesirable items left on the porch that we then had to pay to have hauled away.

On to the pics. I am working on a video so that you can get a walk-thru tour, but until then, here are some stills. For the first few pics, I stood near the center of the store where the table is and spun around in a circle. So you can use the table as a point of reference.
